As conditions change, so do decisions about where to invest, how much exposure to maintain and when to act.

For an on-chain investor, those adjustments often involve stablecoins. You might take profit on a position, reduce an allocation or hold reserves for an opportunity. Some funds will move straight into the next trade. Others may stay in your wallet for days or weeks while you decide.

Waiting can be a deliberate investment decision. But holding stablecoins in your wallet does not, by itself, generate income. Across those periods between allocations, the opportunity to earn a return can go unrealised.

For the capital you don’t need immediately, tokenised money market funds offer a cash-management option worth considering.

A familiar treasury question, now on-chain

One lesson from my time in banking has stayed with me: managing money includes managing the periods between investments.

Treasury teams pay close attention to those periods. They need enough cash available to meet obligations and respond to opportunities. They also look for ways to earn income on reserves without taking risks that defeat the purpose of holding them.

I see the same question emerging for on-chain investors.

You want to remain ready for your next move. That might mean keeping funds available for immediate execution while managing another portion against a longer timeframe. Different parts of your reserves can have different jobs.

The challenge is matching each portion to an investment and access arrangement that fits its purpose.

Where tokenised MMFs fit

Money market funds invest in short-term instruments, which may include Treasury bills, bank obligations and other debt securities, depending on the fund’s mandate. They seek to generate income while prioritising capital preservation and liquidity.

A tokenised MMF lets eligible investors hold an interest in a money market fund as a token in their blockchain wallet.

Consider the proceeds from a recent trade. You want some available immediately, but expect to deploy the remainder over the coming weeks. A tokenised MMF could serve that second portion, provided its redemption terms match when you expect to need the money.

You can continue assessing opportunities while that portion of your reserves earns income. Over time, paying attention to these intervals can become a useful part of portfolio management.

What should “institutional grade” mean?

To me, the phrase needs to describe something concrete about the investment behind the token.

It starts with the underlying assets: what the fund invests in, and the rules governing credit quality, maturity and diversification. Those choices determine how the fund pursues its objectives.

Then comes accountable management. Fund managers, custodians and administrators have defined responsibilities for the assets and the fund’s operations. Investors should be able to understand who is responsible for what.

Finally, there are clear investor rights. What do you own? How is it valued? How do you receive income and redeem your investment? The answers should be supported by the product’s legal structure, reporting and terms.

These foundations matter when choosing somewhere to hold reserves. They help investors assess whether an offering fits the purpose of that capital, beyond the yield figure alone.

Keep your next move in view

For an active investor, access to capital matters as much as earning income on it.

A token in your wallet does not automatically mean instant redemption. Dealing schedules, settlement times and any available secondary liquidity need to fit your plans. MMFs also carry investment risks: capital preservation is an objective, not a guarantee.

Start with what you need available immediately, then consider how to manage the remaining reserves.

At DigiFT, I believe this is one of the most useful applications of tokenisation: bringing established cash-management options closer to investors who already manage their wealth on-chain.

Uncertainty may keep you on the sidelines. It need not leave your capital idle.

If you are considering how tokenised investments might fit into your organisation’s approach, our Institutional Allocator Guide and editable worksheet offer a starting point for discussions with your investment, risk and operations teams.

And if you would like to discuss your organisation’s plans for tokenisation, get in touch with our team.

Geopolitical tensions, energy-price shocks, shifting interest-rate expectations and reports of security breaches have kept investors on their toes this year.
